Keynote Speaker

Doc Hendley, founder, Wine to Water

Doc HendleyLeadership doesn't always come from the top down. Learn how one person can make a difference in the lives of people across the globe as HFMA's Leadership Training Conference presents keynote speaker Doc Hendley, founder of the nonprofit foundation Wine to Water.

For Hendley, a self-proclaimed "tattooed keg-tapper," leadership was inspired by his passionate interest in the plight of people without access to clean drinking water. He learned that this lack of clean drinking water killed more children than AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.

Instead of looking to others, Hendley picked up the banner himself. Using relationship skills he honed as a bartender, he began holding fundraisers at the bars where he worked and sharing the information he had gathered. The project morphed into Wine to Water, which takes Hendley to some of the most dangerous places on the globe to dig wells and teach people how to maintain them.

In 2009, Hendley was chosen from more than 9,000 applicants to be one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes. His foundation's goal is to help the 1.1 billion people worldwide who lack access to clean water and to raise awareness of these startling statistics:

  • At least one in six people worldwide lack access to adequate amounts of safe water for drinking and hygiene, according to the UN.
  • Water borne illnesses kill far more children than the HIV/AIDS and Malaria combined.
  • Unclean water contributes to diarrhea, the leading cause of illness and death, and translates to 1.5 million preventable deaths each year.

We are all called to lead, are you ready to answer?
