Whether you need a refresher on the Chapter Balanced Scorecard or you’re reviewing it for the first time, this early bird session is for you! Join us for an in-depth look at the 2013–2014 Chapter Balanced Scorecard (CBSC) including a review of each CBSC element and its corresponding goal and weight. Learn how CBSC metrics are determined and measured and discover the importance of the Threshold Performance Level (TPL) as well as the benefits of Chapter Advancement Plans.

HFMA has a wealth of time-tested resources available to help your membership team develop a successful campaign to maximize your recruitment and retention efforts. In this introductory session, learn what’s available, where to find it, and get answers to questions like: What reports are available to me? Are there sample scripts and letter templates I can use? What are HFMA’s national membership efforts and how can my chapter leverage these efforts to yield the best results?

At the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Explain HFMA’s various membership categories
- Find the tools, reports, templates, and other resources you need as Membership Chair in the Chapter Leaders section of the HFMA website

PANORAMA – SESSIONS FOR THE BROADER VIEW: Chapter Websites: Making Your Information Click

 

Is your chapter making the most of its website? Is the design drawing visitors in or turning them away? And most important, are you guiding them to your most important information? These questions and more will be explored in this new LTC session. Learn how people use websites, the importance of a “clean” design, and how writing for the web is different than other writing. Get tips for acquiring a steady flow of relevant content and how to effectively manage and maintain your website.

Begin your leadership year on the right foot with this informative session that will provide practical tips, techniques, and resources to prepare and execute an effective board meeting.

- Develop an effective agenda for chapter board meetings
- Organize your preparation so that everyone has what they need well in advance of the meeting
- Develop procedures to receive committee and project updates
- Conduct an efficient board meeting that engages your board members and advances the goals of your chapter

Some principles and practices become tradition because — they work! Learn how to recruit and retain members based on the principles of segmentation. Market segmentation can help you target your recruitment and retention efforts and assist you in better understanding the makeup of your chapter. You’ll also find out how to identify potential markets in your chapter, the value proposition for each market segment, and how to build a membership committee that reflects the full spectrum of your market segments.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Identify key markets for your chapter based on segmentation to accurately target potential members
- State the value proposition for each of your key markets and recognize its importance in your chapter’s membership initiatives
- Define your members’ needs to ensure you are providing real value in their everyday job functions
- Build a peer-to-peer membership committee and succession plan based on your chapter’s segmentation.

NEWSLETTER CHAIRS: Get Set for Success: Planning Your Chapter Newsletter

 

You’ve agreed to serve as editor for your chapter newsletter. Now what? What will you publish? Where will you get the material? How will you move from ideas to publication? This session explains the basics of a chapter newsletter with an emphasis on editorial content, acquisition, and production. We will also discuss how best to work with the various people who can help you create your newsletter, including authors. Are you experienced? Then by all means, share your planning processes! Bring 5 copies of your chapter’s newsletter to the session or, if you will be bringing a laptop to the sessions, bring a flash drive with copies of your newsletter to share. These may be copies of the same issue or different issues.

 

At the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Create a plan for editorial content that will engage your readers
- Implement effective strategies to acquire articles
- Implement procedures to streamline the editing and production process
- Understand how to meet the Davis Chapter Management System (DCMS) requirement for member communications

You’ve identified your program goals; now it’s time to plan the actual learning experience for your attendees, identify topics and develop learning objectives. In this session, you’ll learn about the important HFMA chapter resources and tools to help you identify the hot topics for YOUR chapter members. In this session, you will learn the techniques for developing compelling objectives to define your programs and hear practical tips for selecting and working with speakers.

 

At the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Define your target audience using HFMA Market Segment Reports and other survey data
- Develop dynamic program content suited for your local audience based on member preferences and feedback
- Develop concrete, compelling, and measurable learning objectives based on the needs of your target audience
- Determine the best learning format for your program based on the content, target audience, and objectives
- Identify and select the best speakers for your program including vendors/sponsors

TREASURERS: Intro to the Chapter Treasurer’s Job

 

The chapter treasurer interacts with nearly every area of a chapter’s operation and has an effect on educational programming, membership, and strategic planning. This session outlines the responsibilities of the treasurer and will provide you with background on chapter not-for-profit accounting, financial reporting, financial policies, chapter QuickBooks Online accounting software, federal tax reporting, internal controls, and management oversight. You will also learn about recent updates to the Federal IRS Form 990, its focus on governance policies, and the implications on the HFMA not-for -profit chapters.

 

At the end of this session you will be able to:
- Identify financial reporting requirements for your chapter including budgeting, record keeping, and federal and state tax reporting
- Execute an action plan to complete your chapter’s annual tax and financial reporting requirements
- Maintain key financial internal control requirements to protect your chapter's financial operations
- Understand the three governance policies associated with Federal IRS Form 990 management oversight filing
requirements: Conflict of Interest, Whistleblower, and Document Retention and Destruction
- Understand the key processing attributes associated with HFMA’s QuickBooks Online accounting software and how it’s used to address your chapter’s accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and federal tax reporting requirements
