A phone triage system is at the center of Midland Memorial Hospital’s patient-friendly ED approach. Trained nurses advise low-acuity patients to seek care at the nearby urgent care center or federally qualified health center. Non-urgent patients who prefer to get treatment in the ED are charged a $150 deposit. This approach has helped shorten ED waiting times for patients who truly need emergency care. A bonus: The hospital’s bad debt fell by more than $3 million in the first year.
