Hospital Association Identifies Steps to Strengthen Healthcare Value
March 11—Policymakers should focus on two interconnected strategies to improve the nation’s healthcare system and its financial viability, according to a report from the American Hospital Association.
The first strategy—to promote and reward accountability—can be accomplished if industry participants focus on accelerating payment and delivery system reforms away from fee-for-service models, advancing the use of health IT and electronic health records, and promoting transparency of quality and pricing, the report says.
The report’s second strategy—to use healthcare dollars wisely—calls for eliminating non-value-added treatments, revamping care for vulnerable populations, and reforming the medical liability system.
The AHA’s board of trustees gathered input over the past year from its regional policy boards, governing councils, and committees for the report.
