HHS: Preventive Health Expanded Under ACA
March 20—About 71 million Americans in private health insurance plans received coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for at least one free preventive healthcare service in 2011 and 2012, according to a government report. Examples of such services include a mammogram or flu shot.
An estimated 34 million Americans in traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans also received at least one free preventive service because of the healthcare law, such as an annual wellness visit.
The data were released in a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), timed with the third anniversary of the ACA. The HHS report estimates how the 71 million are distributed across states, and across race, ethnic groups, and age/gender groups.
