May 2—David P. Canfield, FHFMA, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Frederick C. Morgan Individual Achievement Award, HFMA’s highest individual honor. Canfield will receive the award at ANI: The 2013 HFMA National Institute in Orlando, Fla.

A long-time leader of HFMA’s Southern California Chapter, Canfield is the 55th recipient of this prestigious award, which honors career-long contributions to the healthcare financial management industry and to HFMA.

A member of HFMA since 1974, Canfield received HFMA’s Founders Medal of Honor in 1993 and is a recipient of HFMA’s Follmer Bronze, the Reeves Silver, and Muncie Gold Founders Merit awards and was named HFMA’s Outstanding Member of 1991. He served on HFMA’s board of directors from 1997 to 2000, then as Secretary/Treasurer in 2001-02 and Chair-Elect in 2002-03, before serving as HFMA Chair in 2003-2004.

“Dave Canfield exemplifies the heart of HFMA,” says Joseph J. Fifer, FHFMA, CPA, President and CEO of HFMA. “A tireless champion of our association, Dave has fostered devotion to HFMA among scores of members over the years, while also achieving national respect for his professional expertise. Dave’s theme as HFMA Chair, ‘HFMA—It’s Personal,’ shows not only the special bond that Dave has with this association, but the spirit that pervades all of HFMA.”

Canfield started his career in health care just out of high school—as a hospital janitor—but quickly worked his way up through networking and college into revenue cycle management at different hospitals. In 1985, with 20 years of hospital patient financial services experience, he started his own consulting business, Canfield & Associates, and later became president of the receivables management division of PHNS Inc.
