May 6—The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) plans to remove data regarding eight hospital-acquired conditions (HACs), including infections and mismatched blood transfusions, from the Hospital Compare website when the site is updated in July, according to a recent news report.

CMS began posting data related to the eight HAC measures, obtained from Medicare billing records, to the website in October 2011, over hospitals’ objections of the accuracy and fairness of the information. CMS is removing the data because some of the data are redundant and because an advisory panel recommends using other measures instead, according to the news report.

Recently, CMS released a proposed rule that lays out a framework for implementation of CMS’s HAC Reduction program and updates the measures and financial incentives in the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing and Readmissions Reduction programs.
