CMS Opens Bundled Payment Model to More Hospitals
May 17—Additional hospitals can apply to participate in Model 1 of the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today in the Federal Register. Acute care hospitals paid under the inpatient prospective payment systems (IPPS) are eligible to be considered for participation in Model 1.
Under the initiative, the CMS Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (Innovation Center) is testing four episode payment models—payment arrangements that include financial and performance accountability for episodes of care—to gain higher quality, more coordinated care at a lower cost to Medicare. Testing of the first model, which defines the episode of care as an inpatient stay in an acute care hospital, began in April 2013 following a review of applications submitted in August 2011.
Interested organizations must submit a Model 1 Open Period Information Intake form.
