May 21—Physicians who assign their payment and billing to a critical access hospital (CAH) under Method II (CAH IIs) are now eligible to participate in the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Program, according to updated guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

CAH II physicians can begin participation this year. Those who do will be eligible to earn a maximum Medicare EHR incentive payment of $39,000, provided they can attest to demonstrating Stage 1 of meaningful use. Due to the time required to implement the system changes necessary to support these physicians’ participation in the program, the physicians will not be able to submit attestations until January 2014.
