Position Description

The Senior Editor is responsible for soliciting, revising, editing, and proofing features and departments in hfm magazine. The Senior Editor also is responsible for planning, writing, soliciting, editing, and producing one print/online newsletter. In addition, the Senior Editor tracks financials and contributes to marketing of the newsletter. The Senior Editor works extensively with external subject-matter experts, HFMA’s technical staff, and HFMA’s publications staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

hfm magazine:

  • Contribute to editorial planning for the magazine as a whole
  • Solicit contributions from reputable subject-matter experts to meet editorial needs, including working with these experts to shape the content of their contributions
  • Respond to article proposals
  • Edit/revise/rewrite four feature stories each month, following HFMA’s house style and collaborating with the authors
  • Plan, solicit, and edit two regular magazine departments
  • Proofread pages 
  • Write three to four Q&As per year, interviewing VIPs or leading healthcare executives

Revenue Cycle Strategist newsletter (published 10 times per year):

  • With the Managing Editor-Content Development, plan editorial direction and content
  • With Managing Editor-Content Development, assist with marketing planning
  • Track revenue and expenses
  • With Manager-Web Content, plan web presence
  • Create and follow editorial and production schedules
  • Solicit contributions from subject matter experts
  • Work with freelance writers to create articles and edit all content
  • Work with Production Specialist on layout
  • Proofread pages, coordinate printing and mailing and assist in web posting

Other Editorial Assignments—these may include:

  • Editing regulatory summaries and comment letters developed by HFMA's Healthcare Financial Practices department
  • Production editing of HFMA thought leadership reports

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, or communications; Master's degree preferred
  • Six years of editing experience preferred, including healthcare editing
  • Excellent substantive editing and copyediting skills for print and web
  • Experience overseeing development and production of publications or portions of publications
  • Skill with Microsoft Word and other software in the Office suite
  • Experience posting online content
  • Ability to handle various assignments simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Ability to identify appropriate article topics and key points
  • Ability to identify appropriate sources
  • Careful attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and set priorities toward project completion
  • Ability to work collegially and professionally with external experts and internal stakeholders on all facets of project development and execution
