Physicians have the greatest influence on the decisions that affect patients’ care. Accordingly, they are at the center of efforts to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of the care provided by our healthcare system. As physicians, hospitals and health systems, and health plans work together to reshape healthcare payment and care delivery systems, they must address issues of physician leadership, clinical performance improvement, and physician compensation and alignment to ensure that all stakeholders are focused on the same objective: high-quality care at a sustainable cost.
In this session, HFMA’s Joe Fifer and Healthcare Strategy Group’s Matt Ullum will discuss findings from HFMA’s current Value Project research on physician strategies, including the results of a recent survey of HFMA senior finance executives and findings from site visits to organizations pursuing innovative, value-focused physician strategies.
After this session, you will be able to:
- Define the major capabilities that organizations seek in physician leadership and strategies to cultivate these capabilities
- Understand changes to physician compensation structures that can support value-focused care delivery
- Describe approaches to physician/health system alignment on performance improvement initiatives for both employed and independent medical staff
