Summary

Ideal for those who are new to healthcare finance, this seminar provides an extensive and practical overview of the healthcare system, from economic and policy forces to payment issues to resource allocation. Day 1 is for those with less than one year’s experience in the healthcare industry. That day will provide an overview of the basic components of the healthcare system. Days 2 and 3 address budgeting, strategic planning, payment, and environmental factors.

For those new to the industry, choose 1, 2, or all 3 days depending on your experience and education. 

After these seminars, you'll be able to:

Day 1:

  • Describe the healthcare system from the perspective of providers, payers, and consumers.
  • Identify the impact of economic and policy forces, accreditation and regulatory issues, and tax-exemption concerns.
  • Define the key terms related to payment and reimbursement.
  • Describe the payer segments, including Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care entities.

Days 2 and 3:

  • Summarize financial reporting and analysis requirements unique to the healthcare industry.
  • Discuss major national issues affecting the healthcare industry and their impact on healthcare organizations.
  • Compare major third parties –including Medicare, Medicaid, and managed care — and their methods of reimbursement to providers.
  • Apply resource allocation methodologies, including strategic planning, strategic financial planning, operational planning, budgeting, and capital budgeting, in a cost containment environment.
  • Identify the latest developments and operational implications created by healthcare reform.

Prerequisites

Any college-level introduction to accounting course is strongly recommended.
