AHRQ: 1 Percent of Population Tallies 21 Percent of Healthcare Expenses

Approximately 1 percent of the U.S. population accounted for 21.8 percent of healthcare spending in 2009, with an annual mean expenditure of $90,061 for that group, according to a newly released statistical brief by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Researchers said the 2009 expenses increased slightly from the previous year when the top 1 percent accounted for 20.2 percent in healthcare expenditures. The bottom 50 percent of the population ranked by expenditures, those who require the lowest amounts of healthcare spending, accounted for 3.1 percent in spending in 2008 and 2.9 percent in 2009, according to the report.
