HFMA Awards Highest Honor to Sister Geraldine Hoyler
Las Vegas - June 23, 2005 - The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) has awarded Sister Geraldine M. Hoyler, CSC, FHFMA, CPA, the 2005 Frederick C. Morgan Individual Achievement Award – the Association's highest individual honor. Sister Geraldine is the 47th recipient of this prestigious award that honors career long contributions to healthcare financial management and HFMA.
Sister Geraldine currently holds the office of General Councilor and Treasurer of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, headquartered in Notre Dame, IN. Previously, she was the Chief Financial Officer of Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI), which operates 69 hospitals in 19 states. Sister Geraldine played a crucial role in the formation of CHI by serving on both its steering committee – which was responsible for developing the plan to consolidate three major national Catholic healthcare systems into CHI -- and original Board of Stewardship Trustees before being named CFO in 1996.
Sister Geraldine also played a key role in forming another national health system – one of the first in the United States. In 1978, she facilitated the task force to consolidate a number of independent hospitals sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Cross across six states into the Holy Cross Health System Corporation. As the first CFO of the new system, Sister Geraldine was instrumental in establishing standards across all hospitals, resulting in best practices that were quickly replicated throughout the industry.
Sister Geraldine has been an HFMA member since 1970 and has been a volunteer at the local, regional and national level. She served as Chairman of the HFMA Board of Directors from 1989-1990. She was also the first woman professional to be appointed to HFMA’s Principles and Practices Committee.
HFMA President and CEO Richard L. Clarke, DHA, FHFMA, says, “Sister Geraldine has contributed greatly to HFMA, and the healthcare finance profession as a whole. During her more than 30 year career, she served in numerous financial leadership roles in addition to volunteering at the HFMA chapter and National level. At the same time, she maintained a commitment of service to her order and community at large. Sister Geraldine truly embodies the core values of our Association.”
About the Award The award was named for Frederick C. Morgan, who joined the Association in 1948. His outstanding efforts included a six year tenure as volunteer secretary treasurer. The Morgan Award is the most prestigious individual award given by HFMA and is designed to encourage the spirit of service to the principles of the Association as fostered by Morgan himself. Morgan retired from healthcare in 1965 and died in Rochester, N.Y. in 1985. HFMA members and chapters may submit nominations, which are reviewed by a committee.
