Westchester, Illinois (September 16, 2008)— This year HFMA President and CEO, Richard L. Clarke, DHA, FHFMA was named to Modern Healthcare magazine’s 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare. Dr. Clarke is one of only 17 individuals who have been recognized in this distinguished list each year since its inception. Dr. Clarke ranked 35.
Nominees were determined by readers who recognized individuals considered to have the greatest impact on the U.S. healthcare industry. From thousands of reader nominations, 300 were named to the online ballot. Readers then voted for 10 candidates from the list of 300.

As president and CEO of the HFMA, Dr. Clarke guides and supports
leadership initiatives relevant to healthcare financial management. In 2008, the association focused attention on improvements for the U.S. healthcare pricing system.
Through the PATIENT FRIENDLY BILLING® project report: Reconstructing Hospital Pricing Systems: A Call to Action for Hospital Financial Leaders, HFMA directs hospital financial leaders to take command in transforming the nation’s hospital pricing system.
HFMA also gathered leaders from healthcare’s academic, industry and government sectors at the Thought Leadership Retreat: Building a New Payment System. HFMA published findings from the retreat in a white paper: Healthcare Payment Reform from Principles to Action. Both the report and white paper are available at www.hfma.org
Dr. Clarke has held position of President and CEO of HFMA since June 1986. Throughout his distinguished career, he held executive positions at major healthcare systems in Colorado and Florida. He also is the former chairman of the Accrediting Commission on Education in Health Administration (ACEHSA), and AHA Financial Solutions, Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Hospital Association). Additionally, he served on the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Seventh District Advisory Council. Dr. Clarke currently holds an adjunct faculty position in the Department of Health Systems Management at Rush University in Chicago.
