Karen Davis Receives Board of Directors Award

Westchester – July 29, 2009 – The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) Board of Directors has honored Karen Davis, PhD, President of The Commonwealth Fund with its annual Board of Directors Award.  The award was presented during the 2009 ANI: The Healthcare Finance Conference, held June 15-17 in Seattle.

The HFMA Board of Directors Award recognizes individuals or organizations for their significant positive contributions to the profession of healthcare. 

Dr. Davis has spent her career devoted to improving our national healthcare system. Before joining The Commonwealth Fund, a philanthropy organization engaged in independent research on health and social policy issues, she served as chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. 

Under Davis’ direction, The Commonwealth Fund is a leading voice for reforming the U.S. healthcare system to achieve coverage for all, at reasonable cost, and with services that are coordinated, patient-centered, and efficiently delivered.  It has been instrumental in the conversation of advancing cost effective quality healthcare in the U.S. and has created numerous studies with quantifiable results comparing systems around the world.

Furthermore, Dr. Davis has worked with HFMA on numerous initiatives including Patient Friendly Billing.  She has published a number of significant works on health and social policy issues, including the landmark books Health Care Cost Containment and Health and the War on Poverty.
