Chicago - July 2, 2007 – The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) will award the 2007 Frederick C. Morgan Achievement Award--the Association’s highest individual honor--to John P. McGuire, FHFMA, CPA, executive vice president, CFO, and assistant treasurer of the board of St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, during the annual Chairman’s Reception and Banquet at HFMA’s Annual National Institute, June 24-27 in San Diego.
McGuire is the 49th recipient of this prestigious award that honors career long contributions to healthcare financial management and HFMA. “John is an inspiring leader who treats others with respect and dignity,” says Mark S. Solari, FHFMA, CPA, past president of HFMA’s Greater St. Louis Chapter, adding that McGuire is “a very good motivator and mentor.”
McGuire's career in healthcare began as an undergraduate student working part-time in the finance office of a Memphis hospital. His career has taken him to leadership positions not only with HFMA, but also with provider organizations in the thick of some of health care’s most dramatic changes.
McGuire served 19 years of his professional career in the BJC Health System--the first 17 years at the Jewish Hospital, where he rose to the position of executive vice president. BJC was one of the first mega-systems in the country as managed care began to flourish and healthcare providers looked for ways to enhance the efficiency and continuity of care. A key player in the development of the BJC system, McGuire became executive leader for the administration and operation of the newly merged Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
McGuire also has served as senior executive officer of the 628-bed Greenville Hospital in Greenville, S.C., the flagship hospital of one of the largest health systems in the Southeast.
In addition to his current financial responsibilities at St. Anthony's Medical Center in St. Louis, McGuire is also leading a $90 million addition and renovation for the medical center campus.
McGuire has had extensive involvement with HFMA for nearly 30 years. His volunteer leadership in HFMA took him from chapter officer to the National Board of Directors, on which he served two terms. McGuire also served on the HFMA National Matrix, Nominating Committee, Audit and Finance Committee, National Task Forces, and finally as National Chairman in 1994-1995, during which his theme was “Gateway to the Future.”
McGuire has been heavily involved with the Greater St. Louis Chapter--including serving as chapter president--and has received the St. Louis Gateway Award for service to the chapter over an extended period of time. In recognition of his volunteer service, McGuire has also received HFMA’s Follmer Bronze, Reeves Silver, and Muncie Gold Merit Awards as well as the Founders’ Medal of Honor. McGuire is a fellow of HFMA and a national life member.
About the Award
The award was named for Frederick C. Morgan, who joined the Association in 1948. His outstanding efforts included a six year tenure as volunteer secretary treasurer. The Morgan Award is the most prestigious individual award given by HFMA and is designed to encourage the spirit of service to the principles of the Association as fostered by Morgan himself. Morgan retired from healthcare in 1965 and died in Rochester, N.Y., in 1985. HFMA members and chapters may submit nominations, which are reviewed by a committee.
