The following study plan may help prepare you to take the exams:
- Acquire professional experience in areas covered on the exam.
- Plan adequate time to review content covered on the exam.
- Schedule time to complete the self-study program and allow adequate time to complete all practice and review exercises in those programs.
- Attend the National Coaching Course offered at ANI or locally by a Chapter.
- Complete the sample exam questions from the 2009-10 exam materials (available on this website) to become familiar with the test format and types of questions asked.
- Take advantage of HFMA's chapter assistance.
Tips for the HFMA Certification Exam Candidate
CPE-eligible self-study courses are available from HFMA National that you complete independently to help you prepare for the certification exams. The courses:
- Are an effective tool to help candidates prepare for taking the corresponding certification examination
- Are not designed to fully teach healthcare financial management. They assume the candidate has baseline knowledge about the concepts and skills covered in the materials.
- Serve as the foundation from which professional test item writers developed the 2009-2010 certification examination questions.
- Expire on December 31, 2010.
- Support the exams available January 2009 through December 31, 2010. Register for an exam.
There is one course for each of the HFMA certification exams and each course contains a series of guided readings followed by self-assessment review questions, which are different from those on the certification exams. Questions on the certification examinations are based on the material covered in these courses.

Coaching Courses
The National-Sponsored Coaching Course is available for each of the exams and provides an overview of content areas covered on the corresponding exam. The review session helps you learn how to best use the certification study guides to prepare for an exam. If you have already completed some of the self-study materials and review exercises, this session can serve as a review and an opportunity to have your questions answered. HFMA National offers the coaching course at the Annual National Institute. Some chapters also offer the course locally. Check with your chapter.
