About Kevin Wellen

As a member of the BKD Health Care Group, Kevin works exclusively with health care clients including academic medical centers, community hospitals, medical schools and managed care organizations.  Kevin’s broad experience base includes financial audits, financial feasibility studies, compliance, litigation support, third-party reimbursement consulting, preparation and review of cost reports and appeals.

Prior to joining BKD, Kevin worked for a national not-for-profit system as a regional Director of Finance and Reimbursement for four years managing various aspects of finance, budget, & reimbursement for multiple hospitals including two academic medical centers, one children’s hospital and a rehabilitation hospital.  In addition, Kevin has experience working for a Big 4 public accounting firm in their health care assurance and consulting practice for over eight years.  Kevin has also worked for a regional Medicare fiscal intermediary, thus his experience and insight covers government, industry, and public accounting/consulting.

Kevin is one of our disproportionate share team leaders for the Firm.  In addition, he has nineteen years experience with advanced Medicare reimbursement issues including Indirect Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, Disproportionate Share, Organ Transplant Programs, Payments for High Percentage of ESRD Beneficiaries, and ESRD programs.  He has successfully been involved with PRRB Appeals, Department of Justice and Office of Inspector General investigations.

Kevin’s expertise is also recognized outside of BKD.  He is an active speaker for local Healthcare Financial Management Association’s chapters (HFMA) and state hospital associations.  He has had articles published in Dennis Barry’s Reimbursement Advisor and other industry publications.

A graduate from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, in 1989 with a B.S. degree in Accounting, Kevin is a member of the Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, and former Board member.
