Mary Beth Briscoe,
FHFMA, CPA
Chairman, HFMA

My year as HFMA Chairman has been an enormous blessing and a humbling opportunity.

I have been forever changed by meeting and serving thousands of caring professionals who are committed to nurturing and improving the lives of others. As HFMA Chairman, I tried to help identify and meet your needs, knowing that you must translate the resources HFMA provides into actions that will improve organizational performance and make the most of limited assets to provide care for our communities.

In my year as Chairman, I have been touched by the examples you have shared with me of your efforts to make a difference in your organizations and communities. One chapter held a fund-raiser so that a child could compete in the International Special Olympics. Another chapter annually hosts a charity auction to benefit a shelter offering crisis intervention, food, and shelter to children in need. Other members visited elderly people who otherwise would have lived another lonely day, while others helped establish clinics and payment structures to provide health care to individuals who otherwise may have gone untreated.

Also, our chapter volunteers consistently reach out to our members through timely education programs about such issues as the new Form 990, the credit crisis, and price transparency. And just as important, chapters provide networking venues for us to build friendships and share our experiences. These are only a few of the examples of how we are making a difference in the lives of others.

The opportunity to serve as your Chairman would have never been possible without the support of many individuals in my life. I lovingly thank my husband, Wayne, and our daughter, Catherine, for understanding when I was away from home and knowing that I loved them from afar. Connie Becker and John Turner organized me as well as numerous projects while I was away. Steve Pickett initially allowed me to accept the opportunity to serve HFMA three years ago. Mike Waldrum, MD, CEO, University Hospital, supported me this entire year and understood that I may have to respond to his e-mails at midnight. And I lovingly remember my mother’s ever-encouraging voice and the opportunity to share ANI with her at my side. Finally, to the members of the Board, you have consistently inspired me with your expertise and commitment. These are people who have made a difference in my life. To these and so many others, I thank you and appreciate you from my heart.

Bob Broadway will now capably lead HFMA as national Chairman and further our Association’s progress. Bob embodies a passion for health care, and I am confident he will experience the same kindness and support that you bestowed upon me.

As we move forward together to meet our future challenges and design our future healthcare payment and delivery system, I respectfully share these personal thoughts:

  •  Encourage one another to keep the momentum and forge ahead to do the next right thing. As we engage in challenging discussions among various constituents, there will inevitably be consternation and disagreement; strive for consensus and collaboration.
  •  Support one another along the journey by staying connected with the issues, alternatives, and one another, both personally and professionally.
  • Continue to actualize your personal ability to touch and help the lives of your family, friends, co-workers, organizations, and communities. Because, with each and every action, you are Making a Difference both now and for generations to come.

God bless each of you!
