A majority of Americans support a government-run healthcare plan to compete with private insurers, according to the results of a new ABC News/Washington Post poll. A public insurance option is favored by 57 percent of all Americans, while 40 percent oppose it. Support for a public option has grown since mid-August, when 52 percent favored it.
However, Americans remain divided along party lines about the pending healthcare reform legislation, in general. Overall, 45 percent of Americans favor the broad outlines of the proposals while 48 percent are opposed. Seven in 10 Democrats back the plan, while almost nine in 10 Republicans oppose it. Independents divide 52 percent against, 42 percent in favor of the legislation.
