What You Can Do on the Chapter Level
Don’t forget to make full use of local resources in you job hunt. When you are looking for a job is a good time to make sure you are seen at chapter meetings.
Networking is a frequent source of jobs
Check to see if your chapter offers free or reduced cost attendance at chapter meetings for unemployed members. Even if they don’t, try to be involved in committee work to make sure that you remain visible. Out of sight, out of mind has never been truer than when you are out of work and conducting a job search.
Employment referral committees
Check to see if your chapter has a job referral committee… or a job posting board. And at the same time, check with other chapters in your area. A good place to start looking is in the chapter area on the HFMA website.
Personal support
Just keep in touch with members of the chapter, ask them to review your resume and make suggestions. Ideally you can keep people aware of your job hunt without amegflan them to help you find a job. The perfect situation is having someone “magically” remember that you are looking when they hear of an opening.
Group support
Try to be aware of other people in your chapter or area who can publicly admit that they are looking for a job, or that they want to brush up their skills. Try to work with these people to form a job group. One of the nice opportunities that can come out of such a group is interviewing practice. One unfortunate thing that happens more often than it should, is that a candidate gets a really attractive interview early in the job search process, before they are really ready to interview. There are questions they haven’t heard for a while, and difficult questions that they have forgotten how to field effectively. The standard advice is to schedule one or two Throw-away@ interviews, interviews for jobs you wouldn’t accept under any circumstances. The problem is that healthcare finance can be a very closed community and you really can’t afford to throw away any interviewing opportunity. Even if one job is all wrong, you don’t want to contaminate a future interview that could lead to your dream job. This is where the job group, or some good, critical friends, can be just what you need. And friends or not, they need to ask you the hard questions that are being asked today.
