Senior Editor
3 years at HFMA

What do you do at HFMA?

I’m a senior editor in the Publications Department. Our primary mission is to publish hfm, the Association’s monthly magazine. Besides editing several columns and feature articles for the magazine, I also gather information and write for the magazine’s News Watch and Executive Close-Up sections. As an editor, I ensure that the articles’ structure is logical, that the spelling and grammar are correct, and that the headings and subheadings capture the essence of the articles and act as signposts for the reader. The Publications Department also produces several newsletters; I manage the production of Strategic Financial Planning, one of our quarterly newsletters.

In addition to our talented in-house publications staff, we work with a lot of gifted writers; there are many extremely knowledgeable people who contribute to our publications.

What do you like about life here?

There are so many bright people at HFMA, from whom I have learned a great deal--not only about healthcare finance, but also in regard to negotiation, participation, and communication. I also really appreciate the benefits. The extra benefits, like the scheduled-day-off program and the health club membership, are great.

Why did you choose to work at HFMA?

I’ve always worked in publications--as a fact-checker, proofreader, and editor, as well as a freelance editor and writer for several years. Most of my career has been in healthcare publishing. Since working here at HFMA, I have a whole new appreciation for the complexity of healthcare finance, including the importance of the revenue cycle and the intricacies of how hospitals get paid. I hope that the information and news HFMA provides to the members helps them manage their day-to-day responsibilities.
