Transitioning to Value: PROMETHEUS Payment Pilot Lessons

As the United States healthcare system begins to transition from volume-based to value-based methods of payment, providers, payers, federal agencies, and other healthcare organizations are experimenting with payment models that can effectively align incentives for stakeholders to generate quality care outcomes while reducing the cost of care. A group of providers participating in a pilot of the PROMETHEUS Payment® project have been preparing for implementation of a new payment model over the past year. Their experiences demonstrate both the opportunities and challenges providers will face in transitioning to a value-based system.
