The Community Value Index® (CVI) assesses the value hospitals provide in their communities by evaluating ten metrics in four dimensions: financial performance, cost structure, hospital charges, and overall quality.

Higher CVI scores are desirable and suggest that a hospital is financially viable, maintains reasonable costs and charges, and provides high quality patient care.
The top 100 hospitals in the 2009 CVI study have achieved higher performance levels in all dimensions.
Differences exist by hospital-type, as well. For-profit hospitals scored lower than not-for-profit and government facilities, primarily because of significantly higher inpatient and outpatient charges at for-profit facilities.
