Westchester, Ill. — Nov. 4, 2014 – The Healthcare Financial Management Association on Monday announced the release of a training program designed to improve financial communications between providers and patients. Drawn from the consensus-based Patient Financial Communications Best Practices™, the training program includes scenarios, role-play, and practical advice for ensuring that patients are fully informed about their financial responsibilities, insurance eligibility, financial assistance, and payment options.

“In a time when patients’ out-of-pocket responsibilities are increasing, clear communication between providers and patients is more important than ever,” said HFMA president and CEO Joseph J. Fifer, FHFMA, CPA, as he introduced the training program during a national conference for healthcare finance leaders. “This program helps ensure that patients receive the information and guidance they need.”

The online training program is geared toward frontline patient access staff and their managers. It covers all aspects of financial discussions across care settings, both prior to and at the time of service. The complete Patient Financial Communications Training Program is available for purchase by organizations directly from HFMA. It can be used to train from one to 1,000 learners or more. About the Patient Financial Communications Best Practices

Published in 2013, the best practices were developed by experts across the industry, including patient advocates. Representatives from the American Hospital Association, America’s Health Insurance Plans, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the National Patient Advocate Foundation participated. They were advised by national healthcare policymakers including former HHS Secretaries Michael Leavitt and Donna Shalala, as well as former Senate Leaders Bill Frist and Tom Daschle and Clinton Administration Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick.
