Web Extra: A Clinical Integration Program: Advocate Health Care
Chicago-area Advocate Health Care has approximately 5,000 physicians with admitting privileges to its 11 hospitals. Approximately 3,400 physicians participate in the Advocate Physician Partners Clinical Integration Program; the remaining 1,600 are either employed or are independents have who chosen to not participate in the program.
Core program elements include managed care contracting activity, covering 280,000 capitated and 700,000 PPO lives, and advanced EHR systems available in 4,000 physician offices.
Advocate reports that the program's generic prescribing initiative, which encouraged physicians to prescribe generics, resulted in $5.5 million of savings in 2008; depression screening for the chronically ill and the subsequent treatment of depression resulted in an additional $4.9 million in direct and indirect savings. The organization reports that other initiatives, including smoking cessation counseling, asthma management, diabetes care, cardiac care, and immunizations, yielded similarly significant results.
Improved outcomes made possible the distribution in 2008 of $30 million dollars' worth of financial incentives to Advocate Physician Partners.
