Session Description

A study of more than 750 hospital mergers found that most acquired hospitals experienced a post-transaction decline in operating margins, revenue, and expenses. However, a cohort of "high-value" mergers were able to achieve the cost reduction and quality improvement goals identified prior to the transaction. This session will review highlights of the research, which was conducted by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions and HFMA, and discuss implications for healthcare leaders. View the report.

Learning objectives:

  • Describe typical effects of a merger on hospital financial and quality performance
  • Discuss common yet avoidable pitfalls that many hospitals encounter during the merger process
  • Identify eight strategies and business practices linked to achievement of higher margins and improved quality
