Best Article Award winners in HFMA’s hfm magazine for 2019-2020 represent outstanding editorial achievement

HFMA is pleased to recognize three articles as winners of the Helen Yerger/L. Vann Seawell Best Article Award for outstanding editorial achievement in hfm magazine in fiscal year 2019-2020.

The award-winning articles were selected by a panel of five leaders in the healthcare industry who review each expert-reviewed article published in hfm. Articles are judged on the writers’ demonstration of technical quality and writing skills and contributions to the literature of healthcare finance professionals.

The following three articles are the FY20 recipients of HFMA’s Best Article Award.

“4 goals for bundled payment: How a hospital succeeded under BPCI-A”: December 2019 hfm

Summary: Abington Hospital in Pennsylvania has enjoyed success under the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced model by focusing on four key goals, including identifying episodes with sufficient opportunities to reduce costs below CMS’s target prices.

“‘Medicare for All’ isn’t equitable for all hospitals”: February 2020 HFMA online

Summary: A payment model in which 100% of payments are based on Medicare rates should consider the inherent disadvantages of such an approach for the large hospitals, including academic medical centers, that provide most Medicare outlier cases (awarded posthumously).

“Not-for-profit healthcare organizations should understand the benefits and risks of FASB’s new alternative accounting approach”: November 2019 hfm

Summary: A FASB Financial Accounting Standards Update now allows not-for-profit healthcare entities to adopt an accounting alternative previously available only to non-public business entities, but the not-for-profits may find it more beneficial not to do so.
