Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Alternative Payment Model (APM) Incentive Proposed Rule Summary

On April 27, 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) placed on public display a proposed rule establishing the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) for MIPS eligible clinicians or groups under the Physician Fee Schedule (PFS). The proposed rule also establishes incentives for participation in certain alternative payment models (APMs).  The proposed rule was published in the May 9, 2016, issue of the Federal Register.  If finalized, policies in the proposed rule generally would take effect on January 1, 2017.  The 60-day comment period ends at close of business on June 27, 2016.
