The GA HFMA Student Leadership Committee aims to cultivate and empower the next generation of healthcare financial leaders by providing students with valuable opportunities for professional development, networking, and mentorship. We strive to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world application through targeted initiatives, educational programs, and interactive events that foster leadership skills, industry knowledge, and a commitment to excellence in healthcare finance.

HFMA Member Advice to Students Transitioning to a Professional Role

My recommendation is for the book “Indistractible” by Nir Eyal.

While we are fortunate to have the advantage of amazing technology to help us navigate our lives a little easier, it’s becoming more and more apparent how distracting these tools can be. The pings, chirps and alerts that we set up to try to make our days more manageable ultimately thwart our very efforts. In a complete 180 from his original book – Hooked – Nir teaches us how to more successfully live with technology by becoming indistractable to it. Any early careerist – or person, in general – can benefit from learning how to make sure your focus isn’t broken when you have a goal in mind!

Organizational skills. Increasingly professional roles are about managing knowledge and information- lots of it! I highly recommend students identify the organization tool offered by their employer and spend some time understanding the functionally. This time investment will pay dividends. If the tool has a seamless interface between the desktop app and the mobile app- even better! When an idea hits you, having an easily accessible recall place is invaluable. Some popular tools include Microsoft OneNote and Evernote.
