Member Spotlight

Student Edition

Allow me to introduce you to Gwen Alpers, who is one of our newest HFMA members. Having graduated in 2020 from Trinity University magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and business, Gwen is currently pursuing her Master of Healthcare Administration degree from Texas State University, where she is expected to graduate in May 2022. She developed her lifelong admiration for hospital administration from spending time with her mother while she worked as the director of perioperative enterprise at MD Anderson Cancer Center. There, she learned the discipline and dedication needed to become an innovative leader in healthcare.

Gwen’s work in healthcare administration has been characterized by her analytical mind and thoughtful approach to tackling prevalent issues in today’s healthcare environment.

Gwen is currently employed as a Graduate Research Assistant under Dr. Paula Stigler Granados, best known for her research on Chagas Disease. Gwen and Dr. Granados are currently working together on a research project funded by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to raise awareness among healthcare providers about Chagas disease. Their efforts thus far have had impressive results, and Gwen anticipates that their research on the subject will be published by the end of the year.

In addition to her professional research projects, Gwen has also participated in numerous Health Administration Case Competitions, showcasing her talent for problem-solving and leadership. During Spring 2021, she served as her team’s leader in the Ohio State University First-year Health Administration Case Competition, bringing them all the way to the finals. This was the first time that Texas State University had advanced to the finals of this competition. Gwen also showed off her teamwork and communication skills in the Trinity University Healthcare PRISm Pitch Competition and the Cleveland Clinic Case Competition.

Gwen has only recently joined the HFMA, but she has already received both her Certified Revenue Cycle Representative and Certified Healthcare Financial Professional certifications. She is looking forward to her continued learning and personal development with the HFMA and hopes to use what she learns in her future career. Gwen will soon be starting her administrative residency and is ultimately hoping to work with women and LGBTQ+ individuals in either Houston or San Antonio. She is excited to participate in the trainings and events offered by HFMA and is hoping to make connections with other HFMA members to become the best healthcare professional she can be.

Welcome to our chapter Gwen.

Until next time,

About Texas State Master of Healthcare Administration Program

The Texas State Master of Healthcare Administration is a CAHME accredited graduate degree program offering students the opportunity to study the health care industry on both an academic and professional basis. During the program, students are exposed to health care leaders within and beyond the classroom and delve into diverse subject matters that comprise the critical core health care management skillset. These topics include quality management, health care law, research methods, operational decision making, human resource management, and financial management, among many others.

One unique aspect of the Texas State MHA student is their rigorous financial management preparation. In Dr. Brad Beauvais' Healthcare Financial Management course, students are challenged with two Healthcare Financial Management Association certification requirements - the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) and the Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR). These certifications align with both textbook-based and live financial management consulting projects in the local area. Throughout the course students are challenged to examine and apply numerous core financial concepts, significantly develop their Microsoft Excel capabilities, and depart the program with a set of competencies and skills that are immediately applicable in the contemporary health care industry.

We are very lucky to have Texas State University help drive the mastery of healthcare financial principles with all its graduate students. Thank YOU!
