This graphic depiction of the contemporary revenue cycle road map was developed to provide both a description of and context for the typical revenue cycle work flows. As such, there is a focus on the consumer, the patient and the customer. Using HFMA’s Patient Friendly Billing℠ research and reports, the roadmap contains the proven critical components for revenue cycle success: people, process, metrics, technology, communications, and culture, as well as work requirements which include a focus on standard work, resources and automation. Finally, the road map depicts the high level activities which typically occur in a production-based set of work flows which allow revenue cycle operations to achieve excellence in financial performance and patient satisfaction. With HFMA’s emphasis on patient financial communications, and patient engagement, it became very important to put the patient in the middle of all we do in revenue cycle operations.
