Q: When a patient presents in the ER shortly before midnight and the patient is subsequently seen by the ER MD after midnight, what is the correct date of service for this visit? The admit date or the discharge date?

A: The answer to the question is “admission date,” i.e., the date on which the EMTALA-compliant patient screening commenced.
