President's Message

After 14 years of volunteering for the HFMA Maryland & HFMA Lone Star Chapters, I am honored to lead the HFMA Lone Star Chapter.  With approximately 2,400 members stretching from the Red River to Temple & E. Texas to El Paso, we are a strong and vital healthcare finance organization focused on quality education, social networking, mentee / mentorship, certification, & community service opportunities.  Over 40 dedicated volunteer leaders, a strong group of sponsors, and our great staff make this all possible.

My hope & goal is to replicate a pre-pandemic environment.  I know most of our members are over the virtual meetings & are itching to attend in-person events.  The Leadership Team reviewed the last 2 years COVID variant spikes & planning our events outside of these timeframes.   Here are some of the initiatives I hope to accomplish over the next 12 months:

  • Education – Outside of our normal educational events (Summer Institute Aug 2022; Women’s Forum Oct 2022; Winter Institute Feb 2023), the Chapter is planning a joint Revenue Cycle conference with the HFMA New Mexico Chapter in Oct 2022 & Regulatory conference in 2023 Q2.  The Chapter will continue the monthly Webinar Series, where each member can obtain 2.0 CPE’s free of charge.
  • Networking – When I joined the Chapter in Summer 2012, Past President Phillip McCollough asked me to “beef up” our networking opportunities.  For the next 2.5 years with the assistance of the Social Networking Committee, we created the DFW Networking Roadshow.  Monthly, our committee members would secure a DFW location & have a budget for food / drinks.  Attendance was in the range of 40 to 70 participants. My plan is to re-start this initiative & in we are in the process of planning the 1st event on Thursday July 21st in the Addison Area.
  • Mentorship – Several years ago the Chapter started the MHA Student Mentorship Initiative.  MHA students from the local DFW Universities were placed with Healthcare Leaders to assist with their resumes, interview prep, job offer negotiation & how to succeed in the workforce.  One of my goals is to increase the mentee population pool, by inviting the DFW Business Students & entry-level Hospital Health System employees into the membership program. Once the mentorship program is complete, the goal is to transition the mentees from a student to full HFMA membership & become volunteers in the Chapter.
  • Community Service – Each year the Chapter partners with a DFW non-profit to help drive their mission.  Speaking with DeAnne Copeland, Outgoing Charitable Initiatives Chair, our goal was to identify organizations where our Chapter Members & families can participate in organization’s community service activities.  With that said, I am happy the announce the Chapter is teaming up with SPCA of North Texas.  Both organizations are planning community service activities for the Fall 2022 & Spring 2023.

I want to thank Jorge Fernandez, Outgoing President, for his 2 years of Chapter leadership.  Jorge guided our Chapter through the pains of COVID-19.  As a result of Jorge’s leadership, the Chapter won the 2020-2021 “Best Value” National Award for hosting the Summer & Winter Institute + Networking (Virtual) for free to Providers & Business Partners.  Jorge does not plan to “walk off into the HFMA sunset”,  as he was elected to become HFMA Region 9 Regional Executive III.   Again, Thank you, Jorge, for all of your leadership & hard work for the HFMA Lone Star Chapter.

All of the chapter's work is focused on enriching your experience as members, so we are always open to feedback on our current services and how we can better serve you. Feel free to reach out to me, or any of our chapter leaders, if you have ideas or would like to get involved.
