It’s Patient Experience Week: Check out HFMA resources on improving the patient financial experience

April 22, 2022 6:52 pm
  • In 2014, The Beryl Institute created Patient Experience Week to celebrate all staff working in healthcare who impact the patient experience.
  • There are several ways healthcare organizations can celebrate their revenue cycle staff during Patient Experience Week, which, this year, begins April 25.
  • HFMA has several resources available to help healthcare organizations move their patient financial experience to the next level.

Healthcare staff help create a positive patient experience every day. In 2014, The Beryl Institute, a global community committed to transforming the human experience in healthcare, created Patient Experience Week to celebrate accomplishments, re-energize efforts and honor the people who impact patient experience. This annual event begins on the last Monday in April.

The financial experience is an important yet often underappreciated part of the overall patient experience. In addition to continuing efforts to elevate the patient financial experience, there are many simple ways to celebrate the accomplishments of your revenue cycle team:

  • Give a shoutout to frontline revenue cycle staff in your organization’s newsletter.
  • Post a message of appreciation for your revenue cycle team on social media.
  • Host a pizza party for teams working on-site.
  •  Set up an hour of virtual games and fun for teams working from home and hybrid teams.
  • Declare a Zoom holiday (a workday away from Zoom).

This is also a great time to plan ways to take your organization’s patient financial experience to the next level. Check out these HFMA resources:

  • For inspiration, read HFMA President and CEO Joe Fifer’s 2020 interview about hard truths in healthcare and his call to action on consumerism — both more relevant than ever today.
  • Discover five takeaways from HFMA’s 2022 Revenue Cycle Conference.
  •  Use HFMA’s Consumerism Maturity Model to do a self-assessment of your organization’s consumer-facing business practices and identify targeted ways to improve the patient financial experience.
  • Learn about (or get a refresher on) HFMA’s Healthcare Dollars & Sense best practices for price transparency, patient financial communications and medical account resolution, the fundamental building blocks of the patient financial experience.
  • Listen to this episode of our Voices in Healthcare Finance podcast, in which HFMA’s Fifer interviews Beryl Institute President and CEO Jason Wolf. Gain insights about creating a financial experience that leaves patients with a good lasting impression.
  •  Download the executive brief “The Role of Revenue Cycle in Elevating the Human Experience in Healthcare,” published by The Beryl Institute in collaboration with HFMA.

HFMA salutes all who work to improve the financial experience for patients, not only this week but throughout the year. Thank you for all you do to serve your patients and communities.
