Operational Excellence Exam – Module II of CHFP

The Operational Excellence exam is Module II of the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP). Successful completion of HFMA’s Business of Health Care examination, Module I of CHFP and active HFMA membership are the required prerequisites to enroll in HFMA’s Operational Excellence program. Once you complete the Operational Excellence exam, you will have the knowledge to work more effectively toward the shared goal of improving patient health.

Course Outline:

The intent of Module II of the CHFP is for you to exhibit your mastery of the information learned in Module I, HFMA’s Business of Health Care. In the Operational Excellence exam, you will apply that learning through your careful responses to case study challenges that comprise the exam. The Module II concepts guide is provided as an instructional document is to assist certification candidates in earning the Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) designation by identifying the primary business challenges faced by providers, physicians, and payers today.

Assessment Information:

The Operational Excellence exam is a 56-question case-study based exam. You are presented with 8 case studies and 7 questions for each. The passing score is 65%. If you do not pass on the first attempt, there is a mandatory 30-day waiting period. You may review the key concepts guide while you wait for your next attempt.

  • Apply knowledge and concepts gained in Module I, the Business of Health Care
  • Identify primary business challenges faced by providers, physician and health plans
  • Identify areas of professional practice that will focus outside reading and study on unfamiliar issues

Earning the CHFP – Succeeding in today’s high-value healthcare environment requires financial professionals, clinical and nonclinical leaders, and payers and others to have a broad range of business and financial skills, including:

The CHFP is geared toward financial professionals, clinical and nonclinical leaders, and payers—all those whose jobs require a deep understanding of the new financial realities of health care. The CHFP is earned and awarded upon successful completion of two distinct phases:

  • Module I – Business of Health Care: Participation and successful end-of-course assessment of the HFMA Business of Health Care® online program offering participants an overview of healthcare finance, risk mitigation, evolving payment models, healthcare accounting and cost analysis, strategic finance, and managing financial resources.
  • Module II – Operational Excellence: CHFP aspirants must also complete HFMA’s Operational Excellence exam, which includes exercises and case studies on the application of business acumen in health care.

Please note HFMA professional or business partner membership is a required aspect to hold and maintain the CHFP credential. 

CHFP and Student Members:

Paid student members are eligible to register for and to take both modules of the CHFP certification program (included with membership).
