HFMA Wisconsin Chapter is currently gauging interest for Student Advisors that would serve as a subcommittee under our Membership Committee. These students would act as liaisons with their programs and college/university as well as provide insight on the student experience and how the chapter can provide value to students and engage student members.
Benefits include networking with healthcare finance professionals and other students and the opportunity to influence HFMA initiatives and programs. Other student benefits may be considered in the future.
Interested majors may include accounting, business/management or a business specialty, economics, finance, general business, healthcare administration, public health, public policy, or a related degree.

Once sufficient interest is reached, the committee will plan on hosting a pilot session to discuss details.

Scholarship Purpose
The HFMA Wisconsin Chapter Scholarship program:
- Promotes awareness of the financial aspects of healthcare among current students
- Provides learning and networking opportunities for those pursuing a career in the business of healthcare
- Recognizes the contributions of those with demonstrated engagement in the business of healthcare
- Increases the visibility of HFMA among current & future professionals
Awards
Up to two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded annually for students to apply toward a college degree.
In addition to the monetary award, scholarship recipients plus up to five others from the applicant pool will receive a paid one-year HFMA student membership ($50 value, if eligible per HFMA membership guidelines) and waived registration fees for HFMA Wisconsin Chapter programs for one year from award notification date.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants:
- Are currently enrolled college students, either full- or part-time, in a degree-seeking program at the undergraduate or graduate level.
- Have earned at least 60 post-secondary credits as of the scholarship application date.
- Have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or a GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) during the most recent completed college term prior to applying.
Eligibility criteria, continued:
- Have declared one of the following eligible majors: accounting, business management, economics, finance, general business, healthcare administration, public health, public policy, or a related degree.
*Other majors will be considered as part of the holistic application evaluation. Applicants may include a statement explaining the relation of their major to healthcare finance if not one of the specified majors above.
- Demonstrate engagement in healthcare as displayed through work or volunteer experience, student association involvement, and/or current HFMA Wisconsin Chapter membership. Those with a parent or guardian holding current membership in the HFMA Wisconsin Chapter are also encouraged to apply.
- Show an interest in pursuing a position in healthcare post-graduation.
- Are a Wisconsin resident or are attending a Wisconsin college or university.
Note: This scholarship is focused on the business of healthcare and therefore not for clinical providers of healthcare services. Applicants pursuing a clinical degree (e.g. nursing, physician assistant studies, medical laboratory science, etc.) are not eligible.
Applications which do not meet eligibility requirements or are submitted outside the scholarship application window will not be evaluated.
Evaluation Process & Notification of Awards
- Applications meeting all eligibility requirements are reviewed holistically by the HFMA Wisconsin Chapter Awards & Recognition Committee.
- Applications are rated based on several dimensions including: interest in pursuing a career in the business of healthcare, demonstrated engagement in healthcare, essays (overall impact, sense of purpose, eloquence, creativity), and GPA.
- Scholarship awardees and selected recipients of HFMA student memberships will be notified in April and invited to attend the HFMA Wisconsin Chapter Awards Dinner on May 12, 2022.
Application Requirements
The HFMA Wisconsin Chapter Scholarship application consists of a completed scholarship form available on the HFMA Wisconsin Chapter website along with an essay and transcripts.
a) Essay requirements: An essay is required as part of the scholarship application. Essays must be uploaded in a Word or PDF format and may contain up to 300 words. Include your name and chosen essay topic at the top of your essay.

- How would you go about addressing the staff shortages in healthcare?
- How has the ever-growing remote work environment influenced healthcare today?
- In your view, what is the greatest challenge facing healthcare today?
- What do you view as the top two traits/skills for future healthcare leaders?
b) Transcript requirements: A copy of the applicant’s post-secondary transcripts are required as part of the scholarship application. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Transcripts must be uploaded in a PDF format and contain the student name, credits completed, GPA, and if applicable, the degree/major working toward.

Award Recipients 2021-22: Christian Pecore and Michelle Barth
The goal of Wisconsin HFMA’s Mentorship program is to help provide early careerists or those who are new to healthcare with a support system to develop and grow in their professional career. Mentees are paired with mentors based on different factors to help compatibility. Once a mentor-mentee pair has been introduced, it will be up to the pair to determine the level and frequency of interaction to sustain their mentoring relationship.
According to the Merriam-Webster’s Learners Dictionary, to mentor is “to teach or give advice or guidance to someone, such as a less experienced person.” In other words, a mentor is an experienced and trusted professional who offers a young or new healthcare professional the opportunity to enhance their learning experience in the world outside of their current roles. The process of mentoring allows the mentee to build knowledge, skills and abilities while attaining goals for career development. In turn, the process allows the mentor to enhance his or her own skills, proficiency and expertise by sharing in the development of a future professional.

The Rising Star Award recognizes a professional new to the healthcare finance field that demonstrates great potential for leading the way to improvements at their organization and in their community.
Nominate Criteria:
Nominees will have fewer than five years of experience in positions related to healthcare finance and be currently employed in an area related to healthcare finance.
Award criteria will include demonstrated contributions to going above & beyond in their profession, innovation and leadership in their roles, dedication to continuous professional development, and impact on the betterment of their community.
In addition to nominations, the Awards & Recognition Committee may identify candidates for the award based on member records of chapter involvement. Eligible candidates will be evaluated by the Awards & Recognition Committee and finalist(s) will be reviewed by the WI HFMA Board of Directors to determine the award recipient. The chapter may determine to forego selection of an award winner or determine multiple award winners based on the candidate pool.
