President’s Welcome

Dear Minnesota HFMA Members,
I am honored to serve as your Minnesota HFMA Chapter President for 2026-2027.
First, thank you to Jill Nelson for her leadership this past year. She kept the chapter strong and set us up well for what is ahead. Thank you also to our board, committee chairs, and the volunteers who ran events, built programming, and kept this chapter moving. This chapter runs on people who give their time, and we would not function without them.
I also want to thank our sponsors and business partners. Their support is what makes our education and events possible, and the perspective they bring makes us better. That partnership matters, and I do not take it for granted.
Minnesota is almost 3,000 members strong. My focus this year is simple: volunteers. HFMA works when members get involved, and I want to make that easier to do. Too often people want to contribute but are not sure how to start or what they are signing up for. I want to fix that. That means clear roles, a straightforward way to raise your hand, and follow-through on the commitments we make to each other. If we ask for your time, we are going to use it well.
A few things I want us to focus on this year:
- Make it easy to get involved. Clear volunteer roles, a simple way to sign up, and a real answer to “where can I help.” No one should have to guess.
- Keep our committees active and supported. Volunteers do better work when they known what they own and have the backing to do it. I plan to stay close to this rather than set it and forget it.
- Grow the next group of leaders. A lot of us got here because someone brought us in. I want us to keep doing that, especially for newer members and students starting out in healthcare finance.
Here is my ask. If you have thought about getting involved, do it this year. Join a committee, help with an event, or reach out and tell us where you want to contribute. You do not need a title to start. Our leadership team is listed under Minnesota Leadership. Find a name you recognize and reach out.
HFMA has been a real part of my career. The education matters, but the connections matter more. The relationships and mentorship I have found through this chapter have made me better at what I do, and I want every member to get that same value out of their membership.
Thank you for being part of this chapter. I am looking forward to the year and to meeting more of you at our events.
Matt Pierson
